This post was published 5 years 11 months 22 days ago. Therefore, it may well be out of date. Do not reply on the contents of this post being accurate. This tweak makes logging on to your modem, router, wireless access points, etc. much easier and a little quicker too.
I picked this up over at wrt54g.net. If, like me, you regularly access the web-based admin GUIs of modems, routers, wireless access points, etc., it’s really useful. It’s also very simple to do.
OK, so it’s not too difficult to remember the local IP address of your router. If it’s a Linksys WRT54G and you’ve left it at the default settings it will be 192.168.1.1 and even if you have changed it it’s still quite easy to remember if you access it regularly. If you have a device combining modem, router and WAP then you only have the one IP address to remember, so no biggee really.
However, if like me you have separate a modem and router and multiple WAPs then remembering all addresses can be a tad annoying. Well, not any longer. All you have to do is edit a simple file in Windows to allow you to access your device by typing modem, router, WAP1, etc. into your browser address bar instead of the local IP address.
The article at wrt54g.net is very clear (including screenshots) so there’s no need for me to repeat it here. Go check it out and cut down on your keyboard inputs.
[update 04.07.06] www.wrt54g.net has been revamped and is now under the domain www.wrtrouters.com. The article I refer to above can now be found at www.wrtrouters.com/guides/hostsfiledit/.
