FreeNAS – rebuild and upgrade

I like FreeNAS a lot. It’s a UNIX-based Network Attached Storage server. It’s best points are: great stability, good functionality, open-source and, best of all, it’s free.

I’ve been running a FreeNAS box for a while (previous post) and, with the latest release 0.68 I thought it was time to upgrade a little.

I now have it set-up with the OS running on a compact-flash card (no moving parts to fail and much less heat created). I’ve also reconfigured the hard drives in software RAID 1 for data redundancy. So it now has actual capacities of 75GB (2x80GB drives), 190GB (2x200GB drives) and 298GB (2x320GB drives).

To top it off I’ve added an Intel Pro 1000GT gigabit network card to go with my new gigabit LAN.

I think FreeNAS is a good solution when you have multiple PCs and/or Macs and need large amounts of shared hard drive space.
